Two web portals built for the Ticino Ambulance Federation: one dedicated to first aid courses for the general public (BLS-AED, IAS, paediatric emergencies), the other to NAEMT and AHA certified training for emergency professionals. Online registration flow, calendar with real-time availability, direct access to the e-learning platform. Two different audiences, one clear experience.
Emergency training had an access problem.
FCTSA coordinates ambulance services in Canton Ticino, and among its activities is training, on two fronts: first aid courses for the general public and NAEMT and AHA professional certifications for first responders, paramedics and healthcare operators. Two worlds with radically different needs, languages and expectations. The previous registration system wasn't up to the task: the process was fragmented, unclear, and didn't give prospective trainees the information they needed to decide, which course, when, where, how many seats were left. For a federation that trains those who save lives, the access barrier to training was a real problem.
Two portals, two audiences, one standard.
We built two separate platforms, because the two audiences don't talk to each other: a citizen looking for a BLS-AED course doesn't need to see PHTLS programmes for paramedics, and vice versa. The public portal presents, in accessible language, BLS-AED courses, IAS first aid at three levels with refresh, paediatric emergencies 0-18 years and courses for new drivers and ASA professional drivers: what you learn, how long it lasts, where it takes place, how many seats remain. The professionals' portal speaks the language of the sector and covers the NAEMT programmes, PHTLS, AMLS, EPC, TECC, B-CON and GEMS, and the AHA programmes, ACLS, PALS and Heartsaver, with acronyms, prerequisites and training credits; there, registration unlocks immediate access to a dedicated e-learning platform, where the participant finds the pre-course materials and manages their training profile. The heart of both portals is the same: not a static list to update by hand, but a calendar showing dates, venues, available seats and registration status in real time, with filters by type and venue, sign-up in a few steps and a page for every course with description, prerequisites and upcoming available dates. The registration flow was designed to reduce friction to a minimum, from 'I'm interested' to 'I'm registered'.
When you train people who save lives, the website isn't an accessory. It's the first point of contact between a person and the skill that could make the difference.

The two portals are online and operational, one for the general public and one for professionals, each with its own calendar and its own registration flow. The relationship with FCTSA is still open.

01Why two separate sites instead of one?
Because the two audiences have incompatible needs. A citizen looking for a first aid course shouldn't have to navigate acronyms like PHTLS or AMLS. A paramedic doesn't need an explanation of what BLS is. Two dedicated portals mean two optimised experiences, not a compromise that helps no one.
02How does the course registration flow work?
The user accesses the calendar, filters by course type, date and venue, checks availability in real time and completes registration in a few steps. For professional courses, registration immediately activates access to the e-learning platform with pre-course materials.
03Which first aid courses does FCTSA offer to the public?
BLS-AED courses (CPR and defibrillator), IAS first aid at three levels with refresh, paediatric emergencies 0-18 years, courses for new drivers and ASA professional drivers. All taught by certified instructors, in Italian, in various venues across Ticino.
04What are NAEMT and AHA courses for professionals?
They are international certifications for first responders and healthcare operators. NAEMT includes PHTLS (trauma), AMLS (medical emergencies), EPC (paediatrics), TECC (tactical), B-CON (bleeding) and GEMS (geriatrics). AHA includes ACLS and PALS for advanced life support. Content is updated every four years and is recognised in 78 countries.
